謝淑薇、彭帥之前，亞洲選手在WTA年終賽雙打最佳成績，就是打進決賽的日本名將杉山愛所保持，不過薇帥配昨天（28日）的勝利，一舉改寫歷史紀錄。
WTA年終賽雙打只限排名前四者參加，代表著整季戰績得維持在一定水準，並非一兩場比賽冠軍就能辦到。
杉山愛在2003年與Kim Clijsters聯手，以1-2的盤數敗給西班牙和阿根廷的組合Virginia Ruano Pascual和Paola Suarez無緣冠軍，
在2007年杉山愛捲土重來，同年在大滿貫女雙製造驚奇，後來被稱為「黃金女雙」的詹詠然、莊佳容也來到WTA年終賽，就拜在杉山愛手上，而日本女將當初的搭檔，就是薇帥配第一戰的對手Katarina Srebotnik。
不過杉山愛當年依舊在冠軍戰落敗，但已締造亞洲選手在WTA年終賽雙打最佳成績，經過6年才由謝淑薇與彭帥所超越，兩人不但寫下歷史紀錄，更是第一組純亞洲的雙打組合。
