聯合國國際法庭31日裁決，日本必須停止每年的鯨魚獵捕行動，駁回日本所稱獵捕鯨魚是基於科學研究目的說法。

日本雖一再宣稱捕鯨是為了研究，但實際上鯨魚肉是日本相當普遍的食物。

國際法庭指出，日本所稱的科學研究，「不能光聽該國的一面之詞」，並指令日本「取消任何現有殺害、捕獲或處理鯨魚的授權、許可或執照，並不得再發生任何新的許可」。
