automated 是「自動化的」，含意是「人為使某系統或某物自動化」，例如：

an automated billing system
自動開帳單系統

這表示開帳單系統原本用人，現在用電腦程式，加以自動化，不須用人。

automatic 是「自動的」或「無意識的」，指物件有自動裝置，不用人為操縱，或不過思考，直覺反應的，例如：

an automatic door
自動門

這表示門設有控制裝置，可以依使用狀況，自動開關。

an automatic answer
下意識的回答；未經思考的回答

至於 automatical，現代英語不這麼用，雖然副詞還是用 automatically。幾乎所有的拼字檢查系統都會標明 automatical 錯誤。
