在一座宮庭中，有一棵非常高大且茂盛的樹，結出的果實非常香甜美好。

當時有一人來到王宮，國王問他：「這棵樹會長出非常香甜的果子，可惜樹身實在太高，你有辦法摘取得到嗎？」此人回答：「這棵樹雖然高大，但還是有辦法的。」於是，他取來斧頭將樹砍斷，準備等果子長出來後再來摘取。但辛苦等待了好長一段時間，還是一無所獲，即使想再將樹身接上也沒有用，因為樹已枯死，無法吸收養分，自然長不出果實。

如來法王有持戒樹，能生殊勝妙果，食之則心生願樂。欲食妙果應當持戒，修諸功德。破戒之人則如同斷樹般，樹根枯死，欲令復還，了不可得！

典故摘自《百喻經‧卷二》

省思

經云：「戒為無上菩提本，應當一心持淨戒，若能堅持於淨戒，是則如來所讚歎。」修行想要有所成就，必須從持戒下手。藉由持戒，時時刻刻檢視自己的身口意三業，心念清淨，自然與道相應。
