首屆全球慰安婦紀念日活動，14日在南韓首爾鐘路區中學洞日本駐韓國大使館前舉行。全球有17個城市同步響應，大約有2000多人參加了紀念日活動，希望藉此敦促日本政府真心道歉並負起責任。
根據《朝鮮日報》報導，慰安婦紀念日是為了紀念已故的金學順奶奶於1991年8月14日作為第一個韓國證人，講述二戰期間被強徵為慰安婦受害經歷。2012年12月，在台灣舉行的「為解決日軍慰安婦問題的亞洲連帶會議」上，正式確立了該紀念日。
全球17個城市同步響應這項活動，在日本東京，40多名東京民眾14日下午6點多聚集在「解决日軍慰安婦問題全國行動」，呼籲聯合國將8月14日定為「慰安婦紀念日」，名古屋、大阪、北九州市等地也舉行類似活動。
在台灣，100多位民眾聚集在台北日本交流協會辦公室前，分發了3000張明信片，希望敦促日本政府正式道歉並進行賠償。在二戰期間，日本從當時殖民地台灣強徵2000位婦女作為慰安婦。在芝加哥、德國也都舉辦類似慰安婦紀念活動。
據部分歷史學家，統計二戰時期，至少有20萬來自韓國、中國、台灣與菲律賓等地的婦女被強徵，以解決日本軍隊的性需求。不過，由於日本政府不願承認，成為阻礙日本與鄰國關係正常化的障礙。
